Israel learns from its past

Medical experimentation on the young and elderly disgraces the country

The world remembers the anniversary of the end of the war in Europe. Yet right under the noses of Israeli authorities medical experiments are going on similar to those carried out by Nazi Germany on Jews.

Israel is always intent on ensuring nobody ever forgets the Holocaust and the atrocities committed. Especially the medical experiments undertaken by the Angel of Death, Josef Mengele.

It now seems the very lessons learnt there are being practised in Israeli hospitals on old, mentally infirm patients who are being used as human guinea pigs.

The annual report on Israel's health ministry, drawn up by the state comptroller, has disclosed the findings, which has prompted a tightening of controls over hospitals.

The events included painful procedures, sometimes so drugs not used elsewhere in the world could be tried on children. At other times, inking the patient's finger and getting a fingerprint as approval for the test obtained the alleged authority of senile patients.

That these medical experiments were undertaken at all is shocking enough, considering Israelis' oft-quoted history of suffering at the hands of others.

But the medical experiments were done by a country that is committed to following the Helsinki Declaration on biomedical experimentation, a code of practise drawn up by the World Health Organisation.

And apparently, Israel's state comptroller found routine abuses of the Helsinki Declaration's principles at a number of hospitals across the country.

Perhaps it is not so surprising, as Israel's health minister has been tardy in the extreme in introducing a bill to control medical testing. After eight years, the bill has yet to be submitted to parliament for approval.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said at a recent Holocaust memorial ceremony that Israelis must look to themselves for protection. Perhaps. But not if elderly and confined to hospital.

É SEMPRE A MESMA MERDA VITIMIZAM-SE E PENSAM QUE TUDO LHES É PERMITIDO.
